How to Look Candid in Your Photos

Candid photos have a unique charm—they feel natural, spontaneous, and authentic. They capture real emotions and moments, making them stand out in a world of carefully posed shots. But how can you make your photos look candid when there’s a camera pointed at you? Here are some tips to help you achieve that effortlessly candid vibe in your photos.

Looking Candid in your photos seems difficult but it really isn't when you know what to do

Whether it is headshots, personal branding, family photos or just a selfie, being candid is really important. How is it possible though when you are nervous?

Tip #1 - Forget The Camera

One of the best ways to look candid is to pretend the camera isn’t there. Focus on your surroundings, talk to someone, or think about something that makes you happy. The less you worry about being photographed, the more natural you’ll appear.

Pro Tip: If you’re nervous, ask the photographer to snap photos while you’re not actively posing—you might be surprised by how great those shots turn out.

Tip #2 - Engage With Your Surroundings

Interact with your environment to make your photos feel more organic. Lean against a wall, pick up a coffee cup, run your fingers through your hair, or admire something nearby. These actions help you appear more relaxed and absorbed in the moment.

Pro Tip: Choose locations with interesting textures or elements, like parks, city streets, or cozy interiors, to add context to your candid look.

Tip #3 - Keep Moving

Stillness can make photos look posed, so add movement to your shots. Walk, twirl, laugh, or gesture as if you’re in the middle of a conversation. Small actions create dynamic and lively photos that look like they were taken mid-moment.

Pro Tip: Swing your arms, take a step, or turn your head slightly. Even subtle movements can make a big difference.

Tip #4 - Don't Fake It

Forced smiles or exaggerated expressions can make photos look staged. Instead, think of a funny memory, a favourite place, or something you’re genuinely excited about. Authentic emotions shine through in photos.

Pro Tip: Like Danita pictured here. Bring a friend if you are a bit nervous they can really help you relax and get you laughing at the right times!

Tip #5 - Play With Angels

Straight-on shots can sometimes look formal. Instead, try turning slightly to the side, looking over your shoulder, or gazing at something off-camera. Experimenting with angles can add depth and spontaneity to your photos.

Pro Tip: Tilt your head slightly or shift your weight to one side for a more casual, candid pose.

Tip #6 - Use Props & Activities

Props and activities give you something to focus on besides the camera, making your photos feel more natural. Hold a book, sip a drink, or adjust your sunglasses. Engaging in an activity can also create interesting, story-driven shots.

Pro Tip: Pick props that reflect your personality or interests, like a camera, a musical instrument, or a pet. (Or if you are a Dr, a stethoscope)

Tip #7 - Wear Comfortable Clothing

What you wear can impact how you feel in front of the camera. Choose outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable. When you feel good, it shows in your posture and expressions.

Pro Tip: Avoid overly tight or restrictive clothing, especially if you want photos sitting down.

Tip #8 - Relax Your Face

Tension in your face can make photos look stiff. Keep your jaw relaxed, soften your eyebrows, and part your lips slightly. If you’re smiling, let it reach your eyes for a more genuine expression.

Pro Tip: I often ask my clients to look away for a second to regroup. (Like sniffing coffee beans in-between smelling purfume?) Looking at the camera for too long can cause a stiff expression and no one wants that.

Tip #9 - Be In The Moment

The most important tip for looking candid is to be present. Whether you’re at a party, on vacation, or just hanging out, immerse yourself in the experience. Forget about how you look and enjoy the moment—the best photos often happen when you’re not even trying.

Pro Tip: Being in the moment involves letting go of any doubts about yourself. Remembering WHY you are having your photos taken can help a lot.

Tip #10 - Trust Me!

You are in good hands. Everything you worry about I have worried myself or have had 100's of clients who worry about the same thing. I totally get it and am here to help you.

Pro Tip: Don't be afraid to reach out and share your concerns with me.

Don't over think it...

Looking candid in photos is all about feeling relaxed and authentic. By focusing on movement, genuine emotions, and your surroundings, you can create photos that feel real and memorable. So the next time someone pulls out a camera, don’t overthink it—just be yourself and let the moment shine.
