What NOT to wear to your photoshoot

Full disclosure...I’m not here to give you a strict outfit list for your photoshoot.

Because your personal brand is exactly that — yours. If I told you to wear something that didn’t feel like you, it would show straight away. You know your business, your clients and your style far better than I ever could. For example here are a few clients of mine wearing what makes sense for their business. All very different but all very specifically them.

From left to right we have Jess the Marketing Guru, Lily the Surgeon, Briana the Interior Designer and Moniqe the Nature Walker....

Rather than telling you what to wear, here are a few gentle guidelines that will help you feel confident and comfortable on the day.

Try to avoid clothing that doesn’t fit properly, or that you’re constantly adjusting. If you’re tugging at it, worrying about how it sits, or feeling physically uncomfortable, that energy will come through in your photos.

For headshots in particular, I usually suggest choosing a top with sleeves. Because the image crop is often from around the waist up, your arms can take up more of the frame than you might expect. A sleeve - whether short or long - helps keep the focus on your face and creates a cleaner, more balanced look. It's not a strict rule, but it's something many people are glad they considered when they see the final images.

Choose pieces that you feel good in — clothes that you’d happily wear when meeting a client, presenting your work, or showing up for your business in a real, everyday way.

At the end of the day, what you wear is completely up to you. My role isn’t to tell you who to be or how to express yourself. It’s to photograph you as you already are.

What I do encourage is this:

Show up looking like you care.

Show up in a way that reflects the value you place on your work.

Show up as the person you want your clients to trust and invest in.

When you make that effort, your audience feels it. It tells them that you’re proud of your business and that you’ll bring that same level of care to them.

So whether your style is bold and colourful, soft and neutral, tailored and polished, or relaxed and creative — wear it with intention.

Because the only real thing not to wear to your photoshoot is something that doesn’t feel like you or doesn't align with your business.
